VLC doesn't show any picture when playing up videos.

When I try to play up a video in vlc the sound is only playing up. What to do?

Go to http://gentoo-wiki.com/VLC and make sure you've installed vlc with all necessary USE-Flags. I know this problem from my own experience when I try to open a video file that uses a codec VLC does not have.

I have same problem after today update. (vlc-0.8.4a-r1)
No one USE flag has been touched, but I vlc doesn't display any video output. Other players, like mplayer and xine works fine.

What type of video has this problem? Is it mkv? Give us the output of

emerge -pv vlc

I also had these kind of problems with the ~ version of vlc and mkv, stable version works.

Hi!
Possibly this is your problem. Try with a stable version of ffmpeg, not ~arch.
