Audacity won't compile : false GTK w Unicode warning

  • Quote

Post by Danuvius » Tue Feb 14, 2006 6:11 am

To my astonishment, upon trying to compile Audacity, I have received the same ridiculous compilation error that I recall receiving two years ago when I first starting playing around with Gentoo:

Code: Select all

* Audacity will not build if wxGTK was compiled
 * with unicode support. If you are using a version of
 * wxGTK <= 2.4.2, you must set USE=-gtk2. In newer versions,
 * you must set USE=-unicode.

!!! ERROR: media-sound/audacity-1.2.1 failed.
!!! Function pkg_setup, Line 42, Exitcode 0
!!! wxGTK must be re-emerged without unicode suport
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.
At the risk of editorializing: this is bloody dumb.

But never mind... I can pretend that it makes even the tiniest shred of sense that I should have to effectively partly-gut a system library to satisfy the haphazard whims of a single application.

The bad news is that unlike 2 years ago, I am getting the message even after recompiling wxGTK with "-unicode".

So what on earth am I supposed to do now?

Did I do something really stupid along the way? Or is this a bug I should be reporting.

Sorry for ranting... but I can hardly believe this is still an issue with the audacity ebuild, same as it was years ago! Urgh. ;-(

Seems like wxgtk is compiled with the use of gtk2 per default lately! Link

After a quick check at bugzilla I found this here! Hope it helps.

Unmask audacity 1.2.4b - it has better checks and so will work like you expect it to. No sane reason why it remains ~x86 except lack of time to get it stabilised - every time wxGTK breaks audacity bugs get files and it's considered "unstable".
