Kernel panic during kernel compilation [partially SOLVED]

Hi,

I am trying right now to install gentoo on an AMD Turion 64. During the kernel compilation, I get a kernel panic each time I try to compile the tulip module inside the kernel (can't manage to compile it as a module, if it helps). Has anybody met this problem ? Does anybody know the problem ?
Sorry if the question is dumb, I'm quite a Gentoo newbie :-\

Kernel panics, after everything is up and running are a bad sign. It may be hardware (overheating ?) related.
Is it reproducable in exactly the samp[ place?

Why do you want the tulip module - thats an old network card.
Use menuconfig to remove it from the kernel config and try again.

What is the text of the panic?
Just the line or two including the word panic.

I was trying to to compile tulip to get support for my ethernet card, I was wrong. Since it is a ULi PCI controller (M1573) the driver is sata_uli (Am I wrong one more time ?), I removed it from the config. However my new kernel compilation also lead to a panic, and apparently each time I compile the kernel I get a panic.
I tried to get the lines from the error message:

The uli network driver is of the tulip "family" so you'll need that one indeed. For Sata you can use the uli driver, for pata you can use the ali 15x3 (something like that ) driver.

When do you get the panic?
While make is running to compile the kernel or when you try to boot the kernel that makes successfully ?

Killing the interrupt handler can happen on booting a new kernel if the kernel was not configured properly.

The panic happens while compiling the kernel. Furthermore, I tried ealier an emerge --fetchonly --update --deep --newuse world, and after a while it also gave me a kernel panic...
Is it possible that I badly compiled my kernel (I'm thinking especially at the processor options...) ? Should I have used genkernel instead ?
I'll try to get my kernel .config file, should I add some other file ?

Once more sorry for the mess, this is still quite new to me

I saw in the bugs reports that "killing interrupt handler" could be solved by disabling pre-emptive kernel, or removing APM, ACPI & APIC. I'm going to give this a try. May that cause some more problems or can I go on ?

Since you are unable to compile a kernel and run wget to fetch things reliably, lets try running another kernel.

Boot with the liveCD
Mount all your partitions as you did at the original install,
Don't forget swapon and mounting proc.
Do the chroot step and the two environment setting commands.

Do not use fdisk, do not make the partitions.

Your own gentoo install is running on top of the liveCD kernel.
Are you able to compile your kernel now?
Do not change the configuration any from the one that failed.
Do cd /usr/src/linux then start the kernel compile with

Code: Select all

make clean 

before the usuall steps.

If this compile fails, I suspect hardware. If it works, then one of the things you have already mentioned you will try to remove from your kernel.

So, I have rebooted from liveCD, mounted all partitions, chrooted and so on... The kernel compiles fine, without any panic. And then each time I reboot, kernel compilation or emerge leads to a panic, so I guess my kernel is compiled with bad options. Is there a way to get the .config used by the liveCD ?

Yes - the liveCD config file can be read from /proc/config.gz (I think thats the name)
You can then use it as the basis for your kernel.
At the very least, you must uncompress it and copy it to /usr/src/linux/.config, then run make oldconfig.
This turns it into a legal config file for the kernel you have.
You can tune it with make menuconfig afterwards if you wish.

Hi,

After many hesitations, I decided to give the amd64 kernel a new try. A complete reinstallation and a reboot later, I still have to kernel panic, this time directly during reboot. I make a little research and discover the kernel option "acpi=off". And indeed this option given to my kernel prevented it from panicking... So I guess I'll have to go without power management... Or maybe with a more rencent kernel...
