Wesnoth problem (no executable, and I'm in the games group)

I've tried emerging Wesnoth with almost every conceivable combination of USE flags, and there still isn't any wesnoth executable in /usr/games/bin. What's going on? I can get executables for wesnothd, the wesnoth editor, etc., but not for actually launching Wesnoth. Any ideas?

The wesnoth executable should be in /usr/games/bin. If you are not in the games group however, you will not be able to run it. As root "gpasswd -a <user> games" then try running wesnoth.

i read emerge notes, thank you. i am in the games group, but that doesn't mean anything because, as i already said, wesnoth isn't in /usr/games/bin/. please actually read posts before giving knee-jerk responses.

EDIT: btw, i am running amd64 gentoo with ~amd64 and CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O3 -pipe"

Using the precompiled x86 binary from Wesnoth's site works fine, so I suppose that is a sort of "fix" for this problem. Nevertheless, the fact remains that Wesnoth does not place a wesnoth executable file in /usr/games/bin, at least not on amd64 systems. Someone really ought to look into that.

Odd. I've been installing wesnoth since .8 versions on my AMD64.

I know you said you tried all the USE flag combos, but just to make sure, you did it without -server and -tools?

When you emerge do you see it installing files anywhere else? Are you getting stuff in /usr/share/games/wesnoth?

Yeah, I tried those flag combinations. To be sure, I just tried it again, and I'm still getting the same weird problem.

And yeah, I'm getting everything that should be installed (e.g., files in /usr/share/games/wesnoth) except for the file called wesnoth in /usr/games/bin. It's really weird. I'm wondering if it's a problem that only pops up if one is newly installing the game rather than upgrading from an earlier version? I dunno.

Ah, so it's not just me.

I ran "emerge wesnoth" as well and I'm getting exactly the same problem. Looks like it installs fine - but no binary. I'm guessing it's either a) a bug in the ebuild or b) a compatibility problem with amd64.

If anyone works it out please post.

I tried to install it today, too. No executable either, but I have an x86.

I'm having the same problem on x86.

Has there been a solution to this yet?

Which version do you all use? I am running Wesnoth 1.0.2 on AMD64 fine.

hi all,

i'm running amd64, and wesnoth runs just fine:

Code: Select all

strowi@Sleipnir ~ $ emerge -pv wesnoth

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] games-strategy/wesnoth-1.0.2 -dedicated -editor -gnome +kde -lite +nls -server* -tools 0 kB

strowi@Sleipnir ~ $ which wesnoth
/usr/games/bin/wesnoth

can someone please post output of "emerge -pv wesnoth" and emerge info?
are you all using CFLAGS="-O3" ?

-dedicated

I had the same problem with these flags:

Code: Select all

[ebuild R ] games-strategy/wesnoth-1.0.2 +dedicated -editor -gnome +kde -lite +nls -server -tools 0 kB
Then I removed 'dedicated':

Code: Select all

[ebuild R ] games-strategy/wesnoth-1.0.2 -dedicated -editor -gnome +kde -lite +nls -server -tools 0 kB
and it worked fine. I guess it didn't mean what I thought it did ("include the option for running a dedicated server"), the only binary installed was 'wmlxgettext'.

Did you try this?

(I'm not using amd64)

wesnoth: /usr/games/bin/wesnoth /usr/share/man/man6/wesnoth.6.gz

search wesnoth

I ran "gpasswd -a <user> games" and still could not run the executable. After looking around the owner of
/usr/games/ was myself but the owner of /usr/share/games/ was root. after changing that it worked. :)
