Holy freaking crap!

First post... first time using Gentoo.

Damn did that take a lot of work! So far, it all seems to be worth it. I had some rather annoying frustrations with the install (for example, it would tell me that keycodes weren't recognized every 10 seconds or so and so I kept having to erase what I was doing on the screen and start over many times, the text kept "sticking around" in links too, surprised I read through it all) but honestly... I built it from the minimal ISO and configured everything myself and it feels DAMN good too! I emerged a full KDE system, blocked gnome from being installed, am emerging Firefox right now, currently typing in Konqueror. I even figured out how to get KDE up and running, something else that was completely new to me.

I'm wondering if I made a wise decision compiling it all in Athlon XP optimizations though, considering I have an Athlon 64 3500+ but it still seems to be the fastest distro I've ever used and I'm loving the control over everything!

Now I need to figure out why I'm stuck using VESA - the nVidia drivers don't support my 6100 :(

Anyway, glad to be here. I could see myself sticking with this for the longhaul as I LOVE something that keeps me challenged!

I think that you've to upgrade to last version, 8176, which is in the testing branch. Run

Code: Select all

echo "media-video/nvidia-kernel ~x86" >>/etc/portage/package.keywords
echo "media-video/nvidia-glx ~x86" >>/etc/portage/package.keywords
echo "app-admin/eselect ~x86" >>/etc/portage/package.keywords
echo "app-admin/eselect-opengl ~x86" >>/etc/portage/package.keywords
changing x86 with your arch to unmask the required package versions and

Code: Select all

emerge -uD nvidia-glx
to update.

Welcome! :)

It gets really easy to install and configure after the first time.

That's because it is.

It doesn't really matter. That processor will give you great performance in both amd64 and x86. ;) I personally, don't see an advantage to using x86, so I use amd64.

32bit runs just fine with an amd64 processor you won't have any problems..Just do not try to mix 64bit stuff with 32bit stuff if you are running the OS in 32bit mode.

dgaffuri - thank you for that info. It took a bit of work (had to completely recompile my kernel again and xorg.conf configuration was an absolute pain) but I'm running under full acceleration now!

I'm actually loving this. I had my doubts... but honestly, its stable and good lord I've never seen a Linux distro be so fast! Firefox loads in a matter of three-five seconds... it took an average of 30 seconds on everything else! Now I've got to learn how to customize KDE the way I want it and I'll be all set!

It really shouldn't make too big of difference. I myself would probably hold of on the amd64 so more apps get compatable with it. :)

Definitly. Unless you want to bug test / do really heavy scientific/db work, just compile in 32 bit. You won't see any performance boost with the current code out there. Perhaps in a 6 months or a year things will be different. And in that case you can just make a few changes to your make file, do an emerge -e world, and sleep it off.

just to clarify, this isnt right. going from 32 bit to 64 bit is one of the few things that necessitate a re-install.

Of course you can save your config files, even copy your world file over, but it isn't quite as simple as the above

My bad. I don't know where i heard that. Reguardless the change would take little more than the time it takes to recompile everything + move the files listed above along with settings.

The first few months feel like an uphill battle, but once you get a little more familiar with your system, you'll soon realize that you're really satisfied with how you have everything set up to suit your needs.
undvd - ripping dvds should be as simple as unzip

Welcome to gentoo. Does give a good felling the first time you get it up and running right.

if you have any questions, comments or about anything else, it's that the forum is for. Best forum I've seen in many years of both geting and giving support on forums. Very friendly place. Personaly, it's 80% of why I use gentoo. The other 20% is portage ;-)

As for wireless keyboards, I'm geting nervous now. I got one for chrismass and was planing to install it on my desktop soon. Hope I don't get any weird issues.
Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it.
