What is the best ipod-like or ipod mp3 player that works well on linux. Im thinking the regular ipod becuase it seems like there is a lot of projects that have to do with the ipod. The thing i don't like about the ipod though is that it doesn't support ogg, but i can still live with that. Any other mp3 players work well with linux?

Players that sync using a filebrowser should work fine with Linux. I use a iAudio M3 and it works perfectly with Linux. Although I plan on getting an iAudio X5L for christmas which should also work for Linux just as well as my M3. There have been a lot of iPod projects because the iPod is ~80% or the market (!!) and because you need to use a program to sync it and put it in its own database.

BTW: Both the iAudio M3 and X5 support OGG which is the main reason i got my M3

I myself have iRiver iHP-200, though it's bit older.. plays oggss, wmass and mp3's, but is bit heavy compared to current ipods.. and of course lot bigger that the latest ipod nanos, but holds 20GB.. also bigger are available. I am not very up-to-date with their latest models, but this model works well with linux, just mount it like any usb-device and that's it. Also some additional tools to create database files to the device are available in portage (called ripdb if I recall correctly).

I have an iriver h120 running rockbox. This is the best combination IMHO. A feature list/comparison can be found here

My next player (likely to be a h340) will have to run rockbox for me to even consider it.

PS: They are working on a Ipod port.
EASY TO INSTALL = Difficult to install, but instruction manual has pictures.

I originally wanted to go with the iRiver H10, but when I asked about linux support on 3 different forums it took 5 weeks for someone to respond. I went with the Creative Zen Micro instead (as you can see, I wanted a small 5 gig player), and have been running it with gnomad with no problems.

I have an iPod nano and had no luck gettings songs onto the iPod so it will be itunes-compatible. But I don't really care anymore since I can just use the file browser in iPodLinux to select songs I can just transfer to it like a hard drive. iPodLinux keeps getting better and better and will soon move to mpd for music so we can finally do other things while listening to music.

In other words, iPodLinux is the only reason I will buy from Apple again. :)

Sounds good, but according to the online help and some reviews I've read, the new players do not work without wimp10, any experiences?

I have the sandisk 2.0 gig mp3 player and it works good if you do not add files from windows media player. You can use windows file explorer. But I think that works wonders

You seem to be thinking the iPod works well on Linux which is definately not what I heard. My iAudio X5L has been working prefectly as it should since on their site Linux is supported. The USB-Host allows me and my friends to share files with eathother without needing a computer. The Video isn't that bad and it plays OGG and FLAC as good as my computer. It has voice record and radio and some other features the iPod doesn't. I *LOVE* this DAP and I highly recommend.

another vote for the iaudio x5l. got my 30gigger off newegg for just over 300 w/ shipping

i won't bother listing all its features as you can easily find them out yourself, but it's really impressive. don't get the 60 gig one though...i've heard that there are weird battery issues with the current 60gig batches and it might not get fixed for a while which is unfortunate but the 30gig L version has probably the best battery life of any such player out there.
