VMWare Workstation Error Message Causing VMWare to Not Load

  • Quote

Post by williamjonah » Tue Nov 22, 2005 4:24 am

I just emerged vmware-workstation, and ran the vmware-config.pl. After running the config file, and setting up the networking and everything, the config successfully completes, and says to run "vmware" .. When I run vmware, I get an error saying that I need to run vmware-config.pl. It seems to be a neverending cycle. Can someone help?

Did you add vmware script to default runlevel?

Code: Select all

rc-update add vmware default
And if you have the file /etc/vmware/not_configured, remove it, and then restart.

Okay, I added vmware to my rc-update, then I removed not_configured, restarted the computer, and the not_configured came back. Both times (before and after the reboot), I got this output while trying to run vmware after doing what you said and running the vmware-config.pl...

/usr/bin/ldd: line 157: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: cannot execute binary file
/usr/bin/ldd: line 167: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: cannot execute binary file
ldd: /lib/ld-linux.so.2 exited with unknown exit code (126)
/opt/vmware/workstation/lib/lib/wrapper-gtk24.sh: line 95: /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/bin/vmware: cannot execute binary file
/usr/bin/ldd: line 157: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: cannot execute binary file
/usr/bin/ldd: line 167: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: cannot execute binary file
ldd: /lib/ld-linux.so.2 exited with unknown exit code (126)
/opt/vmware/workstation/lib/lib/wrapper-gtk24.sh: line 95: /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/bin/vmware: cannot execute binary file

Can you help with that?

Something is messed up on your system, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to chase this one down.
Hopefully someone with better understanding of libraries and linking can help.

So playing around a little bit, I noticed that my ldd is hosed up.. does anyone know anything about fixing this? Here are the errors.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
localhost roberts # ldd /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/bin/vmware
/usr/bin/ldd: line 157: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: cannot execute binary file
/usr/bin/ldd: line 167: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: cannot execute binary file
ldd: /lib/ld-linux.so.2 exited with unknown exit code (126)

roberts@localhost ~ $ ls -la /lib/ld-linux.so.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Nov 20 14:01 /lib/ld-linux.so.2 -> ../lib32/ld-linux.so.2

roberts@localhost ~ $ ls -la /lib32/ld-linux.so.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Nov 20 14:01 /lib32/ld-linux.so.2 -> ld-2.3.5.so

roberts@localhost ~ $ ls -la /lib32/ld-2.3.5.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 90616 Jul 27 21:34 /lib32/ld-2.3.5.so

roberts@localhost ~ $ file /lib32/ld-2.3.5.so
/lib32/ld-2.3.5.so: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), stripped
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any help is appreciated.

The solution for this is to enable the support in the kernel for IA32 emulation and IA32 a.out support under Executable file formats / Emulations
