Wine problem running XMLSpy

  • Quote

Post by Guinpen » Sun Nov 20, 2005 4:46 am

I'm trying to run XMLSpy.exe from XMLSpy 2006 Home on Wine. When I execute it I get a dialog with "Abnormal program termination." The title of the dialog is "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library". I was following the instructions found here: http://www.altova.com/support_platform_linux.html. I tried this on my Gentoo system first with a version of Wine newer than the one indicated on the webpage (I think it was 20050930... I'll try again and will report). Then I found a hardware-identical box with an old Suse 8.1 with wine-20030115 and got the same result. The latest CVS version of Wine wouldn't compile on Gentoo so now I'm trying to emerge 0.9.1.

I'd study the issue on my own first but time is a factor and running XMLSpy ASAP is VERY VERY IMPORTANT. Please help!!!

I'll update this thread as I'm making progress.

Update: The Gentoo machine with wine-0.9.1 runs the splash screen at which point it outputs in the console:

Code: Select all

wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x00ffff04 at address 0x7ffc5262 (thread 000f), starting debugger...
No debugger ever starts so I killed it after 5 minutes. I still cannot build wine from CVS (wine-9999).

I will try 0.9.1 on the SuSE 8.1 machine... who knows... I'm desperate!

Update 2: Crossover Office 5 Trial doesn't run the program either. Cedega from CVS gives the same message as the old version of Wine.

Wine-0.9.1, on the Gentoo box, when used with 'winedbg XMLSpy.exe', gives the following:

Code: Select all

Wine-dbg>finish
First chance exception: page fault on read access to 0x7e510000 in 32-bit code (0x00d133c5).

Update 3: XMLSpy 2006 is hopeless and so is 2005 but 2004 seems to work. The program loads and after I "had a talk" with all the licensing shit, it seems ok. I've run into a very nasty problem with Wine however (happens in ALL wine apps on both 20050930 and 0.9l1). Every time a file open/save dialog opens, there is nothing were the file list should be, no file can be opened, and pressing Cancel crashes the program. Very very problematic (what good is a program if you cannot open a file in it?) - any ideas?

Update 4: The open/save problem was related to Wine configuration somehow; deleting ~/.wine and reemergin wine-0.9.1 fixed it. The program is reasonably stable, although certain IE integration functions crash it. It does bitch about licenses every once in a while, most often at startup. It obviously validates a license over the net, so bringing down the net interdace for a few seconds around startup does the trick. Of course, I only do this because there's no way to obtain a free Home edition license for 2004, but only for 2006 which doesn't run at all.

I'm glad I've helped someone.
