Keeping certain packages from building during world

I couldn't find anything by searching, most likely from not knowing exactly the right things to search for. But I was wondering if there is a way to keep certain packages from trying to emerge during:

emerge -e world

like for instance a dependancy for the package quake4-bin is quake4-data, and I really don't see how going through the 4CD install process again is relevant to rebuilding the world.

AFAIK portage doesn't support that. But you could hack something up with emerge -ep, grep and xargs... that's what I usually do.
