Problems with connecting CRT Monitor

HI
I have just tried to connect a CRT Monitor to my laptop which runs ATI Radeon X700 with ati-drivers.
When I boot my machine everything is fine. The image is on the CRT Monitor only and looking good. But as soon as I start x.org, the picture is on both the CRT and LCD, and the picture on the CRT goes outside the screen(althogh it is a 17" monitor and the res is 1280x1024 - this worked in Windows) and there are some strange lines going through the picture at the top of the screen. Anyone know whats the issue here???
