Next Wolfenstein...for Linux too?

  • Quote

Post by LubosD » Sat Oct 15, 2005 1:12 pm

ID software has announced new Wolfenstein on www.idsoftware.com. Supported platforms will be "PC and Xbox".

I am little bit worried about that Xbox because Xbox means Direct3D.

Does anyone know whether will next Wolfenstein have a Linux version or not?

Thanks

Isnt doom3 and UT2004 also available on Xbox?

Besides, isnt IDsoftware known for their great codebase which tries to be as crossplatform compatible as possible?

I don't know Id's plan this time, but there has been a Linux client for all the Id's games during the last many years (atleast since Q2. Did Q1 have official Linux client too?). And I'll make a guess that the new Wolfenstein either uses Doom3's or Quake4's engine and as both of them has Linux client (Q4 doesn't have yet, but they will realease one within "few weeks"), I don't see a reason why they wouldn't make Linux client for the new Wolfenstein too. But then, i could be wrong too...

I didn't know there is D3 for Xbox.

"PC platform" is very inaccurate :? Why nobody uses "Windows platform" and "Linux platform" :(

John Carmack always ports to Linux and eventually releases his codebase as open sauce. What a guy :D

"PC platform" is very inaccurate
In the case of ID, it is usually very accurate since they support all the main operating systems for the PC platform. (By having open source clients, they make support for any OS a possibility)

It's when others use it to mean "the latest windows" we have problems.

The only ID game I think I wanted to play on Linux and couldn't get to work was Wolfenstine 3D... and since the libraries were so open that was fixed :: http://sourceforge.net/projects/wolfgl

Just for the record, id has directly supported Linux with binaries since the original Doom. One of the first things I did way back then when I started using Linux was to get Doom2 working in SVGA with full sound, midi and mouse support. At the time it was a challenge. :) This was way before they released the code.
