Error during the un-tarring of stage3 tarball

  • Quote

Post by mwdowns » Wed Oct 12, 2005 12:34 pm

I get the following error message when I am untarring a stage3 tarball from my LiveCD:
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
What does that mean? Can I not continue on with the install?

Thanks

See it says 'from previous errors'

can you please post the previous errors that you get? That message alone is fairly useless.

OK.

But, how do I scroll up the long list of stuff that's been unpacked? There's no scroll bar on the side. When I use the up-arrow or the page-up button, I just scroll through previous commands. Is there a error list command to use?

Did you mount the partition you want to install on before trying to unpack the tarball on it? If you didn't it will unpack into the ramdisk and probably run out of space.

I believe so. I've been following the Handbook.
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo/boot
That's right, right?

Yes and did you make sure to run the tar command in the proper mounted directory?

I think I'm doing that too.

Code: Select all

cd /mnt/gentoo
Anyway, I just tried untarring a stage3 from the internet and got this error message right before the one in the OP:
tar: .boot/boot: Cannot create symlink to '.': File exists
Ideas?

mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo/boot

You mount one partition /dev/hda3 at /mnt/gentoo and at /mnt/gentoo/boot!

Yeah, that's what I said I did in my previous post.

Yeah that's your problem, you have the same partition mounted twice, you need a different partition for /boot if you are going to mount it seperately.

Hope this works. I'm trying to untar it again now...
