Alsa on N-Force 4 (Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe) [SOLVED]

hello:

I'm trying to get Alsa to work with my Asus A8n-SLI deluxe mobo.

I've gone with the http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml documentation--the path that compiles support into the kernel and when it runs modules-update, I get errors. after stopping and then starting alsa-sound, I get the following output.

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/alsasound start

I think the config should be like this:

Code: Select all

# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=m

#
# Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
#
CONFIG_SND=m
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DUMMY=m
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=m
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_RTCTIMER=m
(The rest should be the same)

thx robbyjo for the reply:

I did as you said, recompiled the kernel, re-emerged what was needed and rebooted the new kernel.

when re/starting the alsasound init script I get

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/alsasound restart

OSS modules are provided for backward compatibility. But I think your case is what I had encountered in the past. IIRC I fixed it by compiling everything into the kernel like this:

Code: Select all

# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=y

#
# Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
#
CONFIG_SND=y
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=y
CONFIG_SND_PCM=y
CONFIG_SND_RAWMIDI=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=y
CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DUMMY=y
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=y
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=y
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS=y
CONFIG_SND_RTCTIMER=y
CONFIG_SND_VERBOSE_PRINTK=y
# CONFIG_SND_DEBUG is not set

# ... I skipped some stuffs
CONFIG_SND_AC97_CODEC=y
HTH

Hey ive got a GA-K8N Ultra-SLI nforce4 board

I didnt have any luck at all getting in-kernel sound to work. In fact i dont believe that the drivers can do it at all.

If i were you i would remove ALSA and/or OSS support from your kernel and then do the other path in ALSA doc

also make sure alsa and oss are enabled in your USE flags

as well as emerge -alsa-drivers
do emerge alsa-oss

finish all the install in the doc.

if you are having problems with getting W.M. sound to work

emerge -aN world //see what packages are effected by the USE flags change

ps please tell us if this works

tried it your way-- this is what I get after compiling the kernel with only sound support (but no inkernel alsa or oss support)

Code: Select all

theMan linux # /etc/init.d/alsasound restart

Rebooted with the new kernel and Wa-Da-TAH! It worked!

what kernel are you using? are you using alsa-driver, right?
i'm using all what is said in the post with alsa-driver and kernel-2.6.12.5, i have an error loading snd-dummy, but it seems that it loads everything else, and i can turn the volume up with alsamixer but i hear no sound from my soundcard.
what could be causing this? i know the speakers are plugged :-p
