What is nomerge in portage?

What does nomerge mean when I do an emerge -p?

From /usr/lib/portage/bin/emerge:

            # if the package is already on the system, we add a "nomerge"
            # directive, otherwise we add a "merge" directive.

So nomerge obviously means that the package will not me emerged because it has already been merged.

By the way, you won't see "nomerge" for any package listed in "emerge -p" output, unless you've been using the --tree (aka -t) option too.
