Quick USE flags question [solved]

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Quick USE flags question [solved]

  • Quote

Post by Barrakketh » Thu Sep 08, 2005 4:32 am

If I had a package that wasn't installed (for example, live) but is an optional dependency of another package (continuing this example, mplayer), would adding the live USE flag to make.conf cause portage to pull in live and build it before mplayer if I didn't want to install it seperately? If so, would using --newuse cause it to download/build the package that provides that dependency as well?

Thanks.

I don't think "live" is an actual package, but rather a feature that may or may not be compiled into mplayer.
Apart from that: yes, dependencies are automatically solved by portage and it doesn't matter where these dependencies come from: a set or unset USE flag or the ebuild or wherever these thingies come from.
By "solved" I mean: satisfy the conditions to make the desired package work - so if there are other packages to be installed, portage "pulls them in" before compiling the actual package.

In short: yes.

Thanks. It's mainly to get my friend sorted out since he's recently started using Gentoo and I wanted to make it a bit easier to get some optional things sorted for him without trying to remember what exactly the package name was for things I installed long ago.

And live is a package :)

Code: Select all

*  media-plugins/live
      Latest version available: 2005.01.29
      Latest version installed: 2005.01.29
Size of downloaded files: 399 kB
      Homepage: http://www.live.com/
      Description: Source-code libraries for standards-based RTP/RTCP/RTSP multi
media streaming, suitable for embedded and/or low-cost streaming applications
      License: LGPL-2.1

See what happens when you sit on a Windows box when writing in the forums? (Might have looked it up in the online repository though..)

I shouldn't be so fast in making general statements - I seem to be proofed wrong more often than I like ;)
