Streaming mp3's over LAN and even internet

Hello Guys,

I thought I'd ask you before I start to do something useless. The thing is I want to have my music collection on one computer only and stream out my mp3's (yes, I want to stick to mp3's for now). I want to access this preferably by a web interface inside my LAN and even remotely, from e.g. a friend running a Windows XP, by user authentication and listen to streamed mp3.

I wonder what kind of tools you'd suggest, I have mpd and php mdup and running and can control mpd remotely by phpmd. Is it icecast I should install and configure now, shoutcast, or should I rethink the whole setup (maybe gnump3 does what I want in just one package)?

check out streamsicle. It runs on multiple platforms and has a web interface for the user to suggest tracks to play. I believe production has pretty much stopped for it so i wouldn't expect many updates except if you make changes yourself. If you're looking for an easy way to install it on your friend's winxp machine then search download.com's list for streamsicle as they have an installer for windows machines. Unfortunately I don't think there is a user authentication feature.

I used gnump3 for a while (gnump3d?). It does a pretty good job. Its supposed to be able to downsample for low-speed connections and everything, but I never really got that to work.

It'll handle ogg and mpg, too, if I remember correctly.
