I'm trying to use gamin instead of fam on my gnome 2.10 (x86) but when I plug my usbdisk hald/dbus recognize it correctly and mount it on /media/usbdisk but nautilus doesn't add any icon on the desktop the same thing appen with cdrom/dvd

I've tryed to find a gamin howto without luck

run a 'revdep-rebuild' as root and make sure everything is nice and tidy. If you dont have it, intall gentoolkit.

What version of gamin, hal/dbus are you using?

gamin needs kernel-level inotify support. Are you sure you have that enabled? (gentoo-sources is the only official patchset which contains inotify, if I recall correctly.)

I had the same issue. I reverted to fam/portmap. Seems to be a bug in gamin, corrected in its latest version or something like that. In any case, the working version is still not in portage.

Code: Select all

sys-apps/dbus-0.23.4
sys-apps/hal-0.4.7-r2
app-admin/gamin-0.0.26-r6
sys-kernel/morph-sources-2.6.11-r11 (has inotify patch)
I'll try to add a new gamin ebuild to my portage overlay...

Ouch, that would explain it. Gamin v0.1.1 is out and you really need to update. It is sickening that Gentoo falls this far behind and people who run stable x86 are living in a broken world. If you mark Gnome stable, then get off your tuckess and at least get Gamin stable up a little higher than a package that was out a year ago...I say it before, I will say it again, running under x86 is like being in an ass kicking contest, with only one leg.

Ok using gamin-0.1.1 without any patches nautilus recognize the plugged devices, but... hald/dbus mount automagically the new device but nautilus believe that the device is unmounted and the first time I try to open it nautilus report an error like "the device is already mounted" then all works well...

I've had the same behaviour before. I moved to nautilus (GNOME 2.10.1) 2.10.1 and havent seen it since.
