lm_sensors and 2.4 kernel

  • Quote

Post by Xerxes83 » Fri Jun 03, 2005 6:51 am

I am having a bit of difficulty determining which options I should select in the kernel in order to get Hardware sensors to work. I can find a lot of guides about the 2.6 kernel, but for the 2.4 kernel I still don't know which options I should select in the kernel before installing the I2C package (since a lot of stuff, like the I2C-ALGO-BIT DRIVER is also in there). For example, do I enable the 'I2C /proc interface (required for hardware sensors)' or does it come with I2C? The following text suggests I don't even need to enable 'I2C Support' (CONFIG_I2C): "What you need, is the original tree in which you compiled that 2.1.12 kernel.".

I hope someone can clear this up for me...

It's been a while since I used lm_sensors on 2.4 but, as far as I recall, the only thing you need to enable in the kernel is the I2C support part. I don't recall the I2C /proc part but since that's where the info will be it sounds important. Then you need to

Code: Select all

emerge i2c lm_sensors
and run

Code: Select all

sensors-detect
as root which will tell you which modules to use and how to set them up.

Seems you really don't need to (or rather don't want to) enable I2C support:

Like I said, it's been a while. Either things have changed or my memory is worse than I supposed.

I already re-compiled the kernel and installed lm_sensors, so I haven't lost much time. Hopefully the next person reads this post before trying :)
And thx for your replies.

Now I have to figure out a way to get these readings in order:
# sensors
eeprom-i2c-0-50
Adapter: SMBus Via Pro adapter at 0500
Memory type: DDR SDRAM DIMM
Memory size (MB): 256

vt1211-isa-6000
Adapter: ISA adapter
VCore1: +2.33 V (min = +1.79 V, max = +1.89 V) ALARM
+5V: +4.78 V (min = +4.73 V, max = +5.24 V)
+12V: +12.08 V (min = +10.77 V, max = +13.15 V)
+3.3V: +3.33 V (min = +3.13 V, max = +3.45 V)
fan1: 0 RPM (min = 3006 RPM, div = 2)
fan2: 5507 RPM (min = 3006 RPM, div = 2)
ERROR: Can't get TEMP2 data!
Proc Temp: +39.7 C (high = +65 C, hyst = +60 C)
MB2 Temp: -30.3 C (high = +45 C, hyst = +40 C)
ERROR: Can't get TEMP5 data!
ERROR: Can't get TEMP6 data!
ERROR: Can't get TEMP7 data!
vid: +1.85 V
Edit: I checked my BIOS readings and it sais the CPU VCore is at 1.398v. Is this bad, since this is lower than the minimum (+1.79 V)?

the mininum is not an actual minimum, just a vale that you can set to be some predetermined min, so no, I wouldn't worry.
