getting rid of the gnome desktop

Post by arkane » Thu Feb 06, 2003 3:35 pm

I have a question, and it's a rather stupid one, but I wanna do it.
I've started using KDE now that 3.1 is out, and I haven't used the gnome desktop in ages. I've used Window Maker almost primarily until now, even though gnome was installed. The way I installed gnome is to just emerge the gnome-base/gnome ebuild. I want to get rid of the gnome desktop, and it's dependencies, but I'm running Evolution. I know it relies on a few things, so I figured I'd toss the thought in here. I'm sure someone has done this, or at least failed miserably and can tell their story to help me out.
:)

thanks alot.

Well you could try

Code: Select all

emerge unmerge gnome
emerge unmerge evolution
and then

Code: Select all

emerge depclean
emerge evolution
Which should essentially remove everything gnome and evolution and then remove the dependencies and then reinstall evolution which will pick up your old settings easy enough.

wait...
I didn't think portage had that capability now?
the gnome ebuild is really nothing more than a courtesy ebuild that depends on several other packages, right?
Or has this already been fixed in portage?

depclean is far too hazardous for me to use. As it stands, doing an "emerge -p depclean" shows me packages that I use on a daily basis... I'm not getting rid of basiliskII, nmap, realplayer, xchat, prozilla, and a shlew of others :)

hmmm... you might be right about the unmerge gnome thing. I like gnome so have no intention of removing it.

Depclean works fine for me... well it hasn't broken anything yet.

thanks.. appreciative...
So basically it's just a matter of ripping out all of the gnome packages, and fixing the damage afterwards.
