Athlon/Via problem... How to pass boot options?

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Athlon/Via problem... How to pass boot options?

Tried the 1.1a install CD, but that freezes up my Duron/Via combination (the console gives random video patterns a few seconds into the boot). I had the same problem under Debian with kernel 2.4.18, that was solved by boot options mem=nopentium and noathlon
How can you pass those to the initial boot?

give this a whirl: instead of just hitting enter, type

Code: Select all

linux mem=nopentium noathlon
if that doesn't work, you'll have to get someone more familiar with the gentoo install cd what to add for options

IIRC, it should be

Code: Select all

rescue mem=nopentium noathlon

Tried, didn't help. Thanks anyway. As i found out, the 2.4.18 kernel contains a 'debugging' routine in pci.c that actually harms more than it helps, and has to be patched out for my particular blend of Duron and Via kt133a chipset.
Will have to try something else (maybe boot from the debian patched kernel, or go back to an earlier kernel...)

I use Kernel 4.17-r5, this Kernel is very fast and provides superior desktop performance due to the pre-emptive kernel patch which is included. I tried 4.18 and 4.19 but they slowed down my system substancially.
