adsl problem [SOLVED]

 • Quote

Post by pablolo » Sun Apr 03, 2005 3:54 am

Hello I'm trying to install gentoo 2005.0 using the universal CD and I''m having problem connecting to the internet.

I did:
adsl-setup
adsl-start

then it said that I was connected, but I couldn't ping any sites or open them with links2... I get no such host always... am I really connected?

The drivers for my lan card was detected successfully at boot..

Any thing I could do?

Are you sure you're using the correct DNS setting with RP-PPPOE? Some ISP's pass you your DNS addresses upon login, some expect you to set them. Make sure you're using the right setting here.

I'm not really sure about mine but I tried not putting any DNS setttings and automatically set by the server.... I was able to set up my dsl in another distro without entering any DNS info so I assumed it is not needed or being set by the server...

Anything I can do to check on this?

Ohh I just checked on Windows... My dsl connection obtains DNS automatically. so the server option is right for me?

Thanks

Hello I still can't get it to work.

I checked out my /etc/resolv.conf in my libranet system and compared it with the one in the gentoo install....

It does have the same DNS entries in there so maybe it's not my problem here :(

I can connect with adsl-start but I can't ping anything :(

persumably ppp0 is using eth0, yet eth0 has an ip? it *must* not. I also think it may need a different MTU iirc

does your network have dhcp on it? it's possible the livecd is setting it automatically. otherwise, just don't ifconfig eth0. odd though, adsl-* should have handled killing off ip etc. i'd do adsl-stop then if

An example of what it should look like:

[code[
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:A1:72:7A:23
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:18215 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:14683 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:14683
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:22489055 (21.4 Mb) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
Interrupt:5 Base address:0xc800
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr: 0.0.0.0 P-t-P:255.255.255.254 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1
RX packets:17641 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:14106 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
RX bytes:22066420 (21.0 Mb) TX bytes:1196993 (1.1 Mb)
you could try doing

Code: Select all

adsl-stop && ifconfig eth0 down && ifconfig eth0 up 0.0.0.0 broadcast 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0
dunno if that will work though... hopefully someone can clarify this
