Networking Issues...

  • Quote

Post by Formouthica » Sun Mar 27, 2005 4:48 pm

Hello... I am fairly new to the Linux environment and I must say that from what I've experienced it is MUCH better than Windows... but my problem is this, I have a really old computer that I am going to use for a server whilst at college. It has taken me about two weeks to get comfortable with installing Linux via text method... I have attempted on my laptop and now I'm ready to do it to the server.

I get Gentoo installed fine, but I get two errors, one is "Some Local File Systems Fail To Mount" and then it continues to load and right after that, I get the whole netmount error. I've done three installations on this server and netmout still hates me... I then did the "dhcpcd eth0" command and I was able to get an IP address and I could ping any computer on the campus with the same IP 'range' but I couldn't ping any websites. This has gotten me fairly frustrated and I'm not sure what to do, will I have to type in "dhcpcd eth0" each time?

I've been reading these forums quite often and I've read a lot of the problems like this, sometimes, I just don't understand what someone is talking about... heh... that's what sucks about bein' a n00b...

And the server is:

Pentium II 400 MHz
128 MB Ram
ATI Rage 2 8MB
3Com 3c905 [Boomerang]
12 GB HD, 6 GB HD

I know you all can laugh, I did even... ha ha ha...

Thanks in advance for help... :)

Hi, Formouthica, and nice to see that you are happy with linux until now.

Ok, now, let's see about your server.

My first concern is, have you configured your /etc/conf.d/net, as specified in the handbook section :
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... #doc_chap2

Especialy, take care of the
iface_eth0="dhcp"

and
gateway="eth0/192.168.0.1".

As for the your first question, maybe you could recheck your /etc/fstab, as specified in the handbook section : http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... #doc_chap2
Rien n'est éternel, pas même les problèmes...

I got the iface_eth0="dhcp" I didn't do the gateway="eth0/192.168.0.1" because on campus the network automatically assigns these values... I wasn't sure what the gateway was, for it changes from building to building and even floor to floor... if it is required I will check that out...

I believe the other problem, with the fail to mount file system is because I have a second hard drive with Windows 2000 on it, and I attempted to have that included as a boot option... if I were to modify it, would I need to re-install Gentoo?

Thanks for the speedy answer. :)

Well I fixed the netmount error... I was just playing around with the /etc/conf.d/net file and I found that there was an extra line that wasn't commented out, so I commented it and I no longer have the netmount error, but I still can't ping any websites or emerge any files... Any help to this dilemma would be greatly appreciated... :)

Thanks

DO you use dhcp or not?
If not, you have to supply a nameserver yourself in /etc/resolv.conf.
It's in the Handbook.

Yep I use dhcp. I could use the internet perfectly fine with the Live CD and now for some reason I can't even ping anything off campus. It's really wierd, I'm wondering if I missed something or what... :? I followed the handbook to the T so I'm just wondering if it's something that I have to add or what not... hmm...

Thanks for the quick reply. :)

What exactly is in your /etc/conf.d/net ?
What is the output of

Code: Select all

ifconfig
route -n
when dhcp is done?
>>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

my /etc/conf.d/net file is exactly how it is compiled when I got it from the Live CD, i only commented out the line that said

Code: Select all

iface_eth0="192.168.0.2 broadcast 192.168.0.255 netmask 255.255.255.0"
gateway="eth0/192.168.0.1"
I uncommented the line that said

Code: Select all

iface_eth0="dhcp"
that is the only line that is uncommented, the rest are comments, I am actually at 'work' so I can't go type out exactly what it says, but it's that I'm sure. I tried uncommenting the gateway and it still didn't work. I've tried many things that I've seen on the forums here but to no avail. I will try the

Code: Select all

ifconfig route -n
when I get back into my room. Sorry for being sorta vague...

Thanks a bunch though. :)

Well I decided to re-install Gentoo hoping that this time it would be right... for some reason this time when I was trying to configure it from the Live CD I realised that this time I can't even ping the internet... so I've come to some sort of conclusion that it isn't actually my error but the wonderful College that I attend... the first time I installed I was able to emerge from the internet, and now I can't... so the college is preventing me from doing it... :? Any hints or tips to circumvent this??? :)

Different colleges use very different restrictions and systems. It would be impossible to really help any further without knowing more about their setup.

It does sound something like what they do at my university's network. MAC addresses are registered and only those get full access. You have access to the dept. of housing network's addresses until your MAC is registered. Look into either registering the MAC on this computer or changing it to a MAC that is already registered.

I figured that it was something similar to that, but the thing I don't understand is when I boot up the server or my laptop into windows, i have no problem. it's using the same network card and everything, ( I assume MAC addy is the same too ) so it just befuddles me... :? I just downloaded 2005.0 and so I'm installing it on my laptop to get rid of windows all together... hopefully I'll have this network thing fixed... anyone know or heard anything that might help?

Thanks to you all. :-D

Well, if you don't answer my questions for pertinent information then it's pretty hard to help you in any situation.
Re-installation was totally unnecessary.

I found out that the whole me trying to ping off campus was not necessary. I have access to the internet... I can emerge files and what not so I obviously have some outside connectivity. I just don't know how to actually visit sites and what not through the non-gui... but other than that. I'm all set... :) Sorry to have frustrated you.

Oh no harm done - it's not me that had to do a complete re-install ;-)
