/dev/hda3:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2

filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
	e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

Give root password for maintenance
I'm pretty sure I have everything compiled into my kernel - everything that it said to include in the install guide and everything I need for udev. Actually, I can't remember if I'm using udev on this computer or not, but I have the required packages compiled in anyway.

What other things could I look at?

Thanks,
Zac Witte

look like you're missing the fs-tools Package:
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/hda3
You should emerge sys-fs/e2fsprogs to get it.

I have the same exact problem on one machine I just tried to convert to udev.. I haven't figured out what happened yet though.. But I did notice one thing.. My root is on /dev/hda3, and that entry was missing in /dev... It had /dev/hda1, 2, 4, 5,6, 7, 8, of which I only have 1,2,3,4..

So.. It seems udev isn't setup right or something... Any one with any ideas?

Well, I've fixed my problem.. I don't know if its the same as yours though..

I needed to boot with a install cd (or any other cd I would guess), and mount my root drive, and delete the /dev/.devfsd file, which was for some reason sitting there.

Good luck!

looks like the /dev/hda3 device is simply not there... Do you have support compiled in (not as a module) for your IDE chipset?
If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.

In my case (which I've solved), yes, the chipset driver was compiled into the kernel.

It was because the .devfsd file existed that it kind bombed out before it could setup udev.. After I deleted that file (booting from an install cd), everything went smoothly..

Not sure if it was the same problem as themoedius..

I didn't have /dev/.devfsd and I upgraded from e2fsprogs-1.3.5 to 1.3.5-r1

The odd part is, it lets me enter the root password and if I do ls / it lists all my files that are actually on hda3... But the prompt is
root@(none) ~ #

Is there anything that has to NOT be compiled in the kernel for udev to work?

OK I did some more reading about udev, specifically at http://webpages.charter.net/decibelshel ... html#Steps

I played around with a few of the devfs things and now it's working hurray!
