How to move from kde 3.3 to 3.4 ?

Hi people,
I have the problem that i want to move to the new kde 3.4 Release Canditate ..
How can i do that via portage (im not used to portage yet, cause im quite new)

Do i lose my settings, users if i do ?
How can i save those things if yes ?

My second question is how i generaly can choose which version i of an application i want to install/update via portage ?

There's a thread on the desktops forum right now (probably you've yet seen it).
I would not save the configs cos it can give you some troubles, overall being 3.4 a experimental release.

For the last question: portage allways takes the latest stable version of the package you're emergeing. If you want the latest (maybe unstable) version you can do

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge whatever

Or add ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" to your /etc/make.conf.
To emerge a concrete version you can do

emerge "=whatever-x.yy.zz......"

Also valid:

emerge ">=whatever-x.yy.zz......"

Code: Select all

emerge "<=whatever-x.yy.zz......"

Code: Select all

emerge ">whatever-x.yy.zz......"

Just a noob's two cents but from what I understand from this thread, the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS method is less desirable because you could potentially get into trouble with it when you want to do world updates and whatnot. And adding that to your make.conf file seems quite bad since if I'm not mistaken that would essentially remove all masking from portage. Which seems bad.

The better way to go would be to add masked entries in the package.keywords file as per the instructions in the above link. As far as your KDE settings go, X won't even start properly for me, so I can't be much help there...

I have been running my system under ~x86 for months and have recompiled it a number of times and am running just as stable as before. Its an alarmist stance to take in thinking you are going to screw your systems integrity by using ~x86. Besides who runs Gentoo to use 1 year "debian" style systems. Bleeding edge is the name of the game here, atleast for me. ~x86, LDFLAGS and masked packages are all game and ironically, the only package that has killed my system was marked stable...go figure.

That wouldnt work as RC1 is hard-masked. You have to add the packages to /etc/portage/package.unmask. I would wait if I were you. The final is going to be out in a matter of a couple of weeks...just wait till its off the hardmask listing.
