some of my friends have weak PC's and comppiling such packages like ooo-ximian are taking lot of time

is there a whay that i can build package for them?

the arch is i686 but those are P3 or athlon with small amount of slow ram etc.

so how can i emerge --buildpkg or some other way build packages for them optimised for their systems
umm... amd64 then...

janiskr,

If their systems are compatible with yours, you can use

Code: Select all

quickpkg
which will package up a package you already have installed. Be warned it also packages your current settings files, not the defualt ones normall provided with the package.

You can also instruct emerge to buid packages (not to install them). They will go into /usr/portage/packages by defualt. Burn this to CD for your friends. There are several ways to get make.conf right, from passing parameters on the emerge command line, to setting environment varables to editing your own make.conf.

You could also install their hard drive in your PC and do an install on their drive, with make.conf set up for your friends PC.

I have used most methods.

janiskr,

For a single package, you can put the make.conf setting you want to change on the emerge command line, in front of emerge.
For a large number of pcakages, its easier to change make.conf.
If its going to be a regular habit, consider a P3 install on your Athlon box, the you can boot into the P3 system and have it all there.
You can share /usr/portage except for /usr/portage/packages, so you wouldl neeed to fix the two make.conf files to put the ./packages somewere private to the installs.

wow! so it means the two PCs do not need to have the same arch!?
but do they need to use the same version of gcc and glibc?

thank you.
