gnome-terminal does not uses .bashrc [solved]

  • Quote

Post by nirax » Wed Feb 02, 2005 1:12 am

hi all,

i use gnome-terminal under fluxbox.
it works very well, besides that the default configuration will not read the
.bashrc in my root folder which sets the dir colors.
if after starting it i type in "bash" the dir colors will work.
i checked under the activated profile and the command is
" run command as a login shell"
and a login shell is configured by /etc/passwd and points for root on /bin/bash.

if i change the config to "run a custom command instead.." and to /bin/bash the dir colors will be OK but the PROMT_COMMAND will not be set.
(you will see only a bashXY# as promt without computername and path)

so i simply would like to have Promt command and dircolors both working default under gnome-terminal.
odd enough i can also not find a manpage entry for gnome-terminal to maybe sort that out myself.

any ideas?
greetings,
nirax

Hi,
For it to read your root's ~/.bashrc , you need to do this:

su - root [notice the - in between], this way you are entering root's environment.

Instead of doing su root or su, you have to do

Code: Select all

 su - root
. Or, you can do:

Code: Select all

  foo@bar: ~ $ su
  Password:
  bash-2.05b: /home/foo # source ~/.bashrc

HTH..
Sincerly,

hello,

thanks for the tip. but i am root all the time. that should mean that also my profiles and .bashrc is used, or should be used always i call a bash.
Also i understand the " run command as a login shell" option in gnome-terminal will load my shell as it would be a login shell, and this should also process .bashrc.
Some kind of rc he must have processed as the Promt is not standard, and colored (displays machine name and path), so where and why does gnome-terminal uses that from ?

greetings.

I noticed that too. But I switched from gnome-terminal to Terminal (which is better IMO) and haven't had problems since.

For my root account to use .bashrc I put a .bash_profile in /root that contains

Code: Select all

source /root/.bashrc
The default prompt formatting for root comes from /etc/profile otherwise.
