Kernel too old?

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Kernel too old?

I did some searching on the forums and turned up empty handed. I just rebooted and got the message:

...
Freeing unused kernel memory: 76k freed
FATAL: kernel too old
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

Not sure what I've done wrong?

Just guessing, but a 2.4.x kernel is too old to run an NPTL system.

Sorry, kernel version would help :) 2.4.28-r5

I feel like such a noob... I do remember adding in POSIX. That's what's done it then?

Thanks for the help guys. I had put NPTL on there... So now I've put a - infront of it in my USE variable in /etc/make.conf, then did an emerge system and it said everythong was up to date... So I recompiled the kernel, and that didn't help heh... What do I have to do to get NPTL?

Recompile glibc with -nptl in your use flags. That should fix the problem.

Or you could always try a 2.6 kernel. The process to shift to the new kernel is quite painless really.

Ok, thanks :) Maybe I'll go with the new kernel. Suppose I just need to run through the install procedure again and check on the differences there are when using the new kernel. I know I need to at least compile in the PCMCIA support.
