"Updating Portage Cache" Speed

  • Quote

Post by Eagad » Mon Jan 24, 2005 4:34 am

When an "emerge sync" completes, portage proceeds to "Update Portage Cache". This process takes some time on my desktop machine but seems to take excessively long on my 1.5Ghz PowerBook G4 laptop.

Is this a known issue on OSX or is this simply a slow process on the ppc platform? Does anyone know of a way to improve this speed or avoid having to update the cache?

I've sped up my updating quite a bit by simply telling it to be quiet.

Use this (I think):

Code: Select all

emerge -q sync
This keeps the entire portage update from displaying, which apparently causes a performance hit on the powerbook (I'm not sure why). As for the cache update, I'm not sure why it's slower on the PPC, but I agree that it is.

I would recommend trying the package esearch. Once you emerge it, type 'eupdatedb' to create the initial database. You can then type 'esearch' to find packages VERY fast. I bring this up because another tool included, 'esync'. It will sync, with minimal output, and show the updates compared to your last sync. Saying this, syncing is still not very fast on my powerbook with this. I have a 1GHz Ti book, and it takes a few minutes.
