thought i might have fixed the problem by downloading the libpng-1.2.8.tar.bz2 myself and put it in the distfiles folder in portage but that did work until it came to the next package which was:

opengl-update-2.0_pre4-r1

and that came up with the same problem of Temporary failure in name resoloution and Aborting.

Did you copy /etc/resolv.conf from the liveCD to /mnt/gentoo/etc/ before you chrooted during the install?
