Samba starts after fstab tries to mount my shares

As the title say, I see that my window shares arent automatically mounting because right after it tries and fails smbd and nmbd are loaded, and I guess they need to be loaded first. Anyway how do I fix this?

Samba doesn't mount devices as far as I know. If you can mount a windows partition samba will allow you to use the filesystem there if any. Is there a problem mounting them?

Make sure samba is in your boot section.

Code: Select all

rc-update del samba
rc-update add samba boot
And make sure that you have smbfs in your kernel.

I guess that wasnt my problem, i removed samba and added it at start, and sure enough, now it starts before i get the message, but I still get the same error message

"SMB Connection Failed, could not connect all network filesystems"

But as soon as kde is up I can mount it easy as I please and all is well with
mount /lan/xxx

Shouldn't it be something like "//ian/xxx?"

you may find that you need to use the ip address of the server rather than the server name when you try to mount from fstab.

/lan/xxx is my mount point.

As for using the ip, what do I do if its a network of 4 windows computers that get dynamic ip's?

First of all you need to set up static ip addresses in windows machines and change the dhcp pool in your router to start from something like 192.168.1.5 when ip addresses of win boxes are 192.168.1.1 , 192.168.1.2 , 192.168.1.3, 192.168.1.4. In addition you can name win machines in /etc/hosts file:

Code: Select all

# /etc/hosts: This file describes a number of hostname-to-address
# mappings for the TCP/IP subsystem. It is mostly
# used at boot time, when no name servers are running.
# On small systems, this file can be used instead of a
# "named" name server. Just add the names, addresses
# and any aliases to this file...
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/rc-cripts/etc/hosts,v1.82003/08/04 20:12:25 azarah Exp $
#

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.1 myshare
and you will be able to mount the //myshare/sharedspace

Ok, I'll try that and see, but I was thinking there was a reason the router was set up as it was. So theres no way for this to work with dynamic ip's?? That seems a bit lacking.

Let me take a different approach. Is there a init script I can add a line to to make it mount the windows shares, even perhaps as kde is starting up? I can have the entry in fstab include no auto and let the script mount it later. I'm not very familiar with such things though, and dont want to risk messing up my install, so I just want to know if its safe and if so, which file to edit.

Thanks for everyones help!
