Firefox rendering pages makes XMMS skip

Sometimes, when Firefox is rendering complex pages, XMMS will skip.

This is especially noticeable if I browse some Ebay pages, and hit the "Back" button. There are up to half-second pauses when Firefox is rendering the page.

I do have DMA enabled, and it's certainly not a hard-drive related issue, as "hdparm -Tt /dev/hda" does not cause any problems.

Similarly, dragging a window around a great deal, while burning my CPU to 99-100%, does not cause XMMS to skip. Neither does any sort of compiling operation. Only during Firefox rendering pages...

Any ideas?

I get the same thing really bad with Mozilla. I have an AMD 2600+ so I don't think it's that my system is too slow.

One thing I will say though is this problem started exactly when I switched my system to NPTL

yeah whats with mozilla? I get really really slow renders with firefox...especially ebay. It takes something like 10-15 seconds for ebay search to come up ...these forums take about 5. I've tested with other browsers and havent had a problem....Dillo is near instantaneous but doesnt have all the features and stuff. I upgraded gecko-sdk and it still took forever. Is this something I can fix or do I have to shop around for other browsers?

I didnt notice it taking less time before nptl but it could have been....hmmmmm

Does it do the same with Konqueror? I think the Mozilla and Firefox are both resource intensive.

yeah I know

just figured it could be related...if the render is highly resource-intensive then the two problems are really the same....maybe theres a common fix.

and no it doesnt do it in konqueror....takes forever for browser to come up though

I found that the problem has gone away now, after I rebooted. I think the problem started because I emerged a new version of alsa. Maybe rebooting reconfigured some things so that my system would talk to the new drivers correctly.

I have the same problem and it didnt go away after rebooting.

in the beginning i thought it'd be a artsd problem but its happening if i use the alsa plugin as well. it's reproducible if i'm listening to mp3s via XMMS - either from harddisk or a stream from the web- AND i'm using mozilla at the same time. every second, sometimes every very page i load causes XMMS to skip - the page mustn't be too complex for this nasty effect. konqueror DOES NOT cause any skipping. BUT scrolling through a long text file (in my case: emerge.log

) with KWrite did skip the music.

the CPU load (from KDE system guard) in these cases goes up from 10 to 80%, the load average jumps from 0.2 to 0.8.

the ugly thing is that this happened only after my last emerge -uD world. that's why i cannot say if it's the XMMS plugins or mozilla that causes it:
both were updated with this last emerge. or if it's X....that compiled as well with this update job..hmm. maybe i post the list what the last emerges changed.

erm...yeah, and i don't think my system is too slow. (AMD 2000+ [~1,6 GHz], 768MB RAM)

The problem was with the kernel and its CPU scheduler - update your kernel.

i had this same problem and noticed that disabling any and all plugins in the generic tab fixed it. i had normalize volume enabled, but to be honest it wasn't really worth it anyways.

yes, that was the solution in the end.
did what i wanted to do for a long time and switched to kernel 2.6. - that solved this problem an some others (e.g. some ugly USb device stuff)
