Just noticed that yesterday they released 3.14.6. I checked the changelog and there's nothing new, but what the hell, I'm going to install it anyhow. Unfortunately it only comes in a .RPM package, so I am emerging the RPM tool that I need (hopefully).

I'll let everyone know how it goes, and if this revision makes any damn difference. Also, I'll make an ebuild too, if I'm successfull (time to read the HOWTO) :)

The ati-drivers are always rpms. Sometimes you can just rename an older one, do an ebuild ati-whatever digest and then you can do your update.

Don't bother with loading rpm stuff, if' you've installed ati-drivers with gentoo before you've already got it.

You're right, all I did was edit a previous .ebuild and emerge it, and it did everything else. I'm still trying to get my ATI card to operate its best, but right now I get about 1200fps with glxgears and 44fps fullscreen glxgears with my ATI Radeon 9200. I'll do some more tweaking to see if I can get that higher.

Thanks for the response, and the help.

I've got an 9200 se, (stupid edition). And I'm not getting anything like that. Could you post your config file?

I also would like to see the config file for the Radeon 9200. Like iplayfast I'm not getting anything like that.

I'm not using the ATI Drivers for my 8500 and I get about 2700 FPS with the DRI Radeon drivers. So for those of you who have anything equal to or earlier than the 9200 you should really try out the DRI's that are included with Xorg.

Hope this helps. I am going to try the drivers that come with the kernel and see what I get. I'll let you all know and post my config if all goes well.

what xfree version are you using?
does the new ati driver work with xfree 6.8.0? (6.8.1?)

i have an ati radeon mobility 9000 (m9) and i'm getting about 1100FPS on glxgears, with agpmode 4 and pageflips enabled in the x config file. and the kernel dri and kernel ati driver compiled in the kernel. and about the same when i use the xorg driver too. oh, and i'm using kernel 2.6.9-r3 (gentoo-dev-sources).

... but i'm still trying to tweak it up a bit more.

any other ideas? any good news with these new ati drivers?

*** EDIT ***
this answered my question: New ATI Drivers... 3.14.6 (released 9/11/2004)

Would mind explaining how? I keep trying but I always get no driver found for my device which then disables DRI...

When I get home I can show you the config sections of my xorg.conf. Right now I'm running 6.8 but I'd assume you'd see similar preformance boosts with 6.7.

The following are the important parts of my xorg.conf.

I installed xorg 6.8. Uninstalled ATI-Drivers. Recompiled my kernel (6.8/6.9) with DRI support and making sure I compiled the radeon driver. Since I compiled these directly into the kernel I also had to compile agp in as well since DRI doesn't like it if you don't have agp support loaded when the DRI first gets loaded. Then I made my xorg.conf.

Code:
Section "DRI"
   Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "Module"
   Load  "record"
   Load  "extmod"
   Load  "dbe"
   Load  "dri"
   Load  "glx"
   Load  "xtrap"
   Load  "freetype"
   Load  "type1"

        Option     "AGPFastWrite" "false"         # [<bool>]
        Option     "EnablePageFlip" "true"        # [<bool>]
        Option     "RenderAccel" "true"           # [<bool>]
        Option     "SubPixelOrder" "NONE"         # [<str>]
        Option      "backingstore" "true"

BoardName   "Radeon R200 QL [Radeon 8500 LE]"

The new drivers are working for me (they are on portgae now), and doom3 is running great! But should I stick to xorg-6.7 for the moment?

If you cannot use the opensource drives, then yes you should stay with 6.7 until the ATI-Drivers work with 6.8. If you have a 9200 or less then you can choose to upgrade but you cannot use the binary drivers.

Awesome thanks Ranthog. I got it working a few moments ago and put in the options you have in my own config file. I get 200 more FPS now then before :)

I do have a question though. If I comment out "EnablePageFlip" "true" the gears turn super fast but the FPS drops to around 550. If I uncomment it, then the gears turn really slowly, I mean really slowly but it says I am getting 750 FPS...is this right?

I also didnt add the modules part, namely these:

Load "record"
Load "extmod"
Load "xtrap"

Because I didnt know what they are for. I have everything else you have except for these 3, what do they load?

Thanks again for posting your config, I got AGP 4x set thanks to you :D

rickyli - no problem. I'm glad I could help out.

Ranthog - I will be trying your method as well tonight and will posts my findings when completed. I look forward to receiving a higher fps as well.

More from me soon.

Okay I *HIGHLY* suggest using the built in kernel drivers and xorg 6.8 if you have the following cards:

R100 Radeon 7200
RV100 Radeon 7000(VE), M6
RS100 Radeon IGP320(M)
RV200 Radeon 7500, M7, FireGL 7800
RS200 Radeon IGP330(M)/IGP340(M)
RS250 Radeon Mobility 7000 IGP
R200 Radeon 8500, 9100, FireGL 8800/8700
RV250 Radeon 9000PRO/9000, M9
RS300 Radeon 9100 IGP
RS350 Radeon 9200 IGP
RV280 R300 Radeon 9700PRO/9700/9500PRO/9500/9600TX, FireGL X1/Z1 (2D only)
R350 Radeon 9800PRO/9800SE/9800, FireGL X2 (2D only)
R360 Radeon 9800XT (2d only)
RV350 Radeon 9600PRO/9600SE/9600, M10/M11, FireGL T2 (2D only)
RV360 Radeon 9600XT (2d only)
RV370 Radeon X300, M22 (2d only)
RV380 Radeon X600, M24 (2d only)
R420 Radeon X800 (2d only)
R423 Radeon X800 PCIE (2d only)
Radeon 9200PRO/9200/9200SE, M9+

I have used both the external ATI 3.14.1 drivers and the 3.14.6 drivers, as well as the built-in kernel radeon drivers. Overall, Running glxgears in the default small window gives me roughly 200fps more, and running it full screen actually DOUBLES my fullscreen fps when I use the built-in kernel drivers.

Something that no one has mentioned is "What do I set opengl-update to?" When I had the external drivers, I made sure I always did a "opengl-update ati". Now, I decided to go with the command:

Code:

opengl-update xorg-x11

To use the built-in kernel drivers.

Here's my xorg.conf file, in all its glory. You should be able to copy this verbatim as long as you have a ps/2 mouse (Mine is a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical USB), and a standard keyboard.

Code:
Section "Module"

Load        "dbe"   # Double buffer extension
    SubSection  "extmod"

I also wanted to show you my results when using glxgears. Please note these are 1600x1200 @ 24 bit results. The lower the resolution, the higher the FPS you will get:
Code:

No Mouse Movement, idle computer:
8252 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1650.400 FPS
8800 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1760.000 FPS
8786 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1757.200 FPS
8793 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1758.600 FPS
8787 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1757.400 FPS

Moving the mouse around:
8775 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1755.000 FPS
8771 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1754.200 FPS
8754 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1750.800 FPS
8734 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1746.800 FPS
8762 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1752.400 FPS

Opening up Fluxbox Menus:
8367 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1673.400 FPS
8396 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1679.200 FPS
8330 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1666.000 FPS
8351 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1670.200 FPS
8430 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1686.000 FPS

Fullscreen, no mouse movement:
488 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.600 FPS
487 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.400 FPS
488 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.600 FPS
488 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.600 FPS
488 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.600 FPS

Fullscreen, opening Fluxbox windows:
487 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.400 FPS
489 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.800 FPS
487 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.400 FPS
488 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.600 FPS
486 frames in 5.0 seconds = 97.200 FPS

So, who's got any tips to share with us? Anyone else have successfull, FASTER configurations using items either I or Ranthog have left out?

Just a few small updates:

If I comment out all the Option flags for the video card, I get about 600fps less small window and about 20fps less fullscreen glxgears. I'm going to mess around with these a little more, but if you want a surefire working xorg.conf, use the one above and don't comment out the options.

Oh yeah, and I've also noticed that adding the line that disables te DGA extension and commenting it out have no different FPS effect. I don't even know what that is, but it doesn't effect your framerate.

Setting the AGPFastWrite to "true" gives me a black screen when I load startx, requiring me to reboot. Don't enable this.

If you set EnablePageFlip to "false", it lowers FPS by about 600fps small window and 20fps fullscreen. Leave this to "true".

Also, just a reminder, you can actually set the DefaultDepth to something other than 24 (the ATI driver only lets you use 24bit). Changing this from 24 to 16 actually increased my small window fps by 600fps and my fullscreen jumped up to 148fps. I'm doing all this at 1600x1200.

I think that's enough configuring for me today. I'm off to go emerge KDE :)

Good luck everyone. Hope all this information helped.

Thanks djcronos, That's really helpful, and I'll be using your config tonight. One question, is what do you have in your kernel?

Do you think you could post your .config file as well?

I spent a few hours last night trying to get things moving, and so far I've got around 400 fps on glxgears. (And that is an improvement!). I'm running an 9200 se, and did the opengl-update x11-xorg so I'm thinking it's something I'm missing from my kernel.

Also in my xorg log file it says something about
Bus ID PCI:1:0:1 not found (or something along that lines). My card has two pci numbers (PCI:1:0:0 and PCI:1:0:1)

If I comment out the PCI:1:0:1 it seems to work (slowly). Is that important?
I just found on the net that it PCI:1:0:1 is used as a marker for windows. (I've got no idea about this stuff).

Also, I'm using 2.6.9-nitro2 kernel, if that means anything as well. Hope this helps any.

How does your card have two PCI numbers? Are you on a laptop or desktop? AGP or PCI? If it is a desktop, does your motherboard have a built-in video card like mine does? Have you run an lspci?

iplayfast - do you have the BusID option set in the xorg.conf file? If so, try removing it, because usually it can autodetect the device.
