if I do from a root console

Code: Select all

su - usertoto
it works
then just after if I do

Code: Select all

su -
it prompts for a password, then I enter the root password and I get "su sorry"... unpossible...

I've checked

Code: Select all

ls -l /bin/su
rws--x--x /bin/su

what are you trying to do?

make sure you've included your regular user account in the wheel group. check /etc/group

wheel:x:10:root,userthatwant_su

userthatwant_su -- your regular user.

Have a look in /etc/pam.d/su

You'll probably see a line like this:

Code: Select all

auth required /lib/security/pam_wheel.so use_uid
This is because you've had +PAM in your USE flags when you emerged shadow, and the default gentoo setup has that line in it.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is that you can do one of 2 things: add yourself to the wheel group, or remove that line from /etc/pam.d/su.

For more on wheel, use google. In particular, check out Richard Stallman's rant in the man page for GNU su. It's a work of art.
