i currently have gentoo installed on my internal drive on my ibook, though would like to repartition it to give room for OS X. if at all possible, id like to retain all my data and not have to reformat my HD. i know you can use parted to resize partitions, but is there a linux tool that lets you make an HFS+ filesystem on a partition?

Code: Select all

# emerge sys-fs/hfsplusutils
maybe?

i did some research, and that only allows you to read an HFS+ disk. im looking for something that allows you to format a disk in HFS+

I know there's a source patch for the Darwin HFS+ toolkit that will enable you to compile them for Linux. I know this because I've used it before, but I can't for the life of me remember where I found that. Google might help ;)

By sheer coincidence I found the link to the linux patch for the Darwin HFS+ tools again. It's http://lwn.net/Articles/31455/?format=printable , just near the bottom.
If something should go wrong, I also have patch for Apple's diskdev_cmds
(available from http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.2.5/),
which ports newfs_hfs and fsck_hfs to Linux and fixes the endian problems.
The patch is at http://www.ardistech.com/hfsplus/diskdev_cmds.diff.gz .
After applying the patch the tools can be built with 'make -f
Makefile.lnx'.
