How do I install Half-Life/Counter-Strike/Steam?

Hey, I'm new to Linux, and I never knew that Steam was actually available for Linux. I am pretty amazed, but yea anyway.

Can someone guide me through of how to get a hold of Steam and install it. As well, what other games are available on Linux? I know Q3 is, i have the Windows version, I would probably install that as well if I knew how.... PLEASE HELP!!!!

its not available, there is no linux port,
you can try to get it running through wine.
Last i checked though, they had some code in it to stop winex from running it.
It is definately possible to get it running in wine, but difficult
check http://linux-gamers.org , they have howtos and stuff.
they also have a cvswinex available.
I only ever play it at lans, so what I do is I get one of my mates to share his folders and, download the whole thing, straigth of his hard drive. then i run it with cvswinex, simple solution.
Im not a 'cs' player myself, i just like shooting cs lamers from time to time :p

So what exactly is cvswinex? Is that something that runs Windows programs?

wine stands for wine is not an emulator. it is a wrapper that translates win32 API functions. winex is a commercial fork of wine that has better directx support. cvs stands for concurrent versions system, so cvswinex is the latest cvs build of the winex wrapper. *

so in short, yeah, cvswinex is something that runs windows programs.

* not meant to sound patronizing, just trying to explain everything.

Sure, but everybody calls it an emulator.

There are three differences:

Wine is the "normal" version. With a bit luck you will be able to run Steam, too, but it is more pedantically.

WineX is developed & optimized just for games. The problem is, it is not free. You will have to buy it for $5 per month. For more information look www.transgaming.org

WineX-CVS is the free version of WineX but there are not as many games supported as with wineX.

Remarkable how they describe them, too:

Description: client for Valve Software's Steam content delivery program

This doesn't really sound like "Game Server for Half-Life/Steam" to me.

If you're a 'pro gamer' then just forget CS in linux, unless you have 0day hardware :P

But if you're happy with 30-80fps, (with FPS drops _all the time_, which is horrible for CS-freaks, like me) you will probably think that it runs OK with cedega.

Just my experiense, with my P4 2.6, 768MB ram, Geforce 6800LE.

Hope this post make's somewhat sense, since im not really too sober yet.

Yes, it's a "client for the Steam content delivery" to download the dedicated servers - not the game client. I agree it can be easily confused; they should've stuck with the Half-Life Dedicated Server (HLDS) name, or something equivalent. =\

IIRC, Counter-Strike 1.6 ran great on Linux as it did on Windows. My box is a P4 2.8GHz, 1GB PC4000, nVidia 6800GT (OC'd).
