Alsa not working, especially with aplay

Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

Alsa not working, especially with aplay

Hoping someone can help. Very strange problems. Xmms and xine still play fine when using the oss emulation layer, but aplay and csound can't use alsa directly anymore. No idea what did it.

When I try and use aplay, it starts, and there are no error messages, but what happens is the audio is just a loop of a tiny block of audio, sounds like a cd skipping and stuck. The only exit is to control c. If I try to tell xine to use the actual alsa card driver, it also hangs.

I tried unmerging and remerging alsa, even recompiled the kernel, and still the same problems.

Thanks for reading
Iain

I think that I have the same problem...

Seems lika alsa is playing a the contents of a small buffer over and over again.

Doesn't matter if I run as user (member of audio) or as root.
KDE or Gnome is the same. Has nothing to do with arts.
The funny part is that xmms works fine with alsa output plugin.

The really anoing part is that xine has the "loop over small sound buffer"-behaviour regardless of if I use oss, alsa or arts for sound :(

I'd appreciate any help or hints to point me in the right direction.

/Martin

Something interesting...

If I simultaneosly run xmms with alsa output and aplay, then the two audio streams are mixed. Crap from aplay and expected audio from xmms.

Unlikely a problem with low level driver. Seems to occur before the audio streams are mixed.
