UK meetup - Ideas for conference

  • Quote

Post by pwaring » Mon Jul 19, 2004 10:08 pm

There has been a fair amount of interest in the proposed Gentoo meetup in Manchester, so I'm splitting the topic up into two separate threads - one for discussing ideas for the conference and the other for people to confirm their attendance and sort out accomodation.

So, if you have any ideas for the conference, please post them here. If you'd like to actually give some kind of presentation, even better! We'll also be discussing potential dates here as well.

Edit: BTW, the conference doesn't have to be Gentoo-specific, it might go down better if we didn't focus every single presentation on Gentoo because it would put other people off.

I'd like to know more about the new GUI portage system (porthole) and perhaps see it in action?

Perhaps someone can give a talk on how gentoo would like to progress in the server market?

I'll be happy to give a presentation on Vexi, the project I dedicate most of my time to.

(The website and documentation kinda sucks atm, but will be greatly improved by the time the meet-up occurs.)

i dont know if just ANYONE is aloud to come, if they are.. i would come along.

id like to hear some things about the roumors of the "official" gentoo for xbox. id also like to hear more about the bsd port of gentoo i saw in the cvs.
id also like to be able to hear about some of the future of gentoo.

id also like to represent the wasabi team (since im a core developer of the fork by some of the origional developers from the propriotory AOL version) (site: http://www.wasabidev.org , wiki: http://wasabi.t0x.org/ )... i could give a small presentation on wasabi's ideas, goals, and such.

As a relative new comer to Gentoo, I would like to see / get info on portage, building a kernel, backup etc

Well thats what these forums and the gentoo site is for. Anything you want to know has probably been posted just search for it, if it hasn't then put a question in Gentoo Chat and someone should answer you in clear english or come onto the irc channels and have a friendly chat, we should be able to answer most of your questions there and then. try #gentoo and #gentoo-glbt on freenode also for there is a channel made from gentoo users but not affiliated with gentoo officially called #otw (off the wall) on efnet.

have a look at the glbt link first, just in case you are feircely against that

It was just a suggestion
But still valid

OK more flesh on the bones:
Overview of emerge & etc-update, best practices for updating packages & merging configs, restoring a previous version etc
Creating an automated backup, including configs

do you want a deeper understanding of the process that go into making those commands work or a brief outline? You should have been on gentoo-glbt earlier, we had one of the portage dev's on the channel and she could have helped you out there :D I wasn't saying its bad to ask the question, ask away on everything, its the best way to learn but i think waiting until september to know is waiting a bit long. Go to #gentoo-glbt now and ask spectrum, tell him i sent you :D

It is the more indepth knowledge that I would like to see. I have been through the forums (which is my primary reason for using gentoo) but I would like to extend my knowledge, and (ok this is now an addition) add / assist in the creation of ebuilds.

What may take me a week to find, and understand from the forums could probably be done in 20 minutes in a presentation.

Before any planning starts, we need to get an idea of numbers. I'd say 20 people is probably about the minimum. We also need to pick a date asap. The date will probably be the deciding factor for most people weather they can come or not. Does anyone know what other, similar events are taking place over the weekends of september + October? We don't want to clash with anything.

Is there any chance of hosting a simple vote counter somewhere and sticking a message on the main news page. Basicly saying something like "If your interested in coming to the conference/meet up in Manchester on [date], press this button." Do one vote per e-mail or something. If people have to register for the forums just to say they want to come, a lot wont bother and will just turn up!

Number of people dictates the size and type of venue. As for making this a general linux conference, well it depends what the developers want to get out of it! I have a feeling this is mostly for their benefit so they can discuss development ideas face to face. It's their conference, it's up to them.

Well, you can count me in, as long as it comes before I head off to university, meaning september/early october.

How would the first weekend in September be for people? It's after the August holidays when many people go away, but before the universities start back. This will be the 4th/5th of September Unfortunately it clashes with SUNCON,. but to be honest I don't think we'll find a weekend in autumn where there isn't a Linux conference on somewhere.

Provided everything goes to plan and I'm able to make the event, I'd like to use the event to announce the opening of the Script Repository BETA site. Hopefully this will encourage hores of people to hunt for bugs :)

I won't be in attendance unfortunately but may I suggest you dedicate a few minutes at some point to enlarge your "web of trust" by having a moment for GnuPG key signing?

port001: That would be great, if you could give a demonstration of the script repository site working that would be even better. :)

nrl: Great idea - that could also be used as an ice breaker to get people talking to each other (I know from experience that if you turn up to such a conference on your own it's rather intimidating since everyone else seems to know someone!).

Hmm, I still have a couple of badges from when I did a presentation and a tour of my old college, perhaps I could make a name tag... :)
