Gentoo Install question(Probably stupid)

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Gentoo Install question(Probably stupid)

Ok, I got my network now working ok, however, when I got to the part where you enter your new enviroment (#chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash) It then changed the from being 'livecd gentoo#' to 'livecd / #' and when I went to enter the next command '# env-update' I got an error. I had to restart the install, because I couldnt progress. I will carry on with this install, and check back on this before I start get to that point again. Also, links wasnt working(which is what I am using now) is there alternative?
Thanks,

The prompt is supposed to change, because you've changed directory. What was the error with env-update? And were you trying links before or after chrooting? It won't be there afterwards...

Was there a reason you were trying to use links after you chrooted? If you were trying to get to the manual then you may want to do the following before you chroot.

Change the root password:

Code: Select all

passwd
switch to a new terminal:

Code: Select all

ALT+F2
then login and use links to get to the manual from there.
Then you can switch back to the older terminal:

Code: Select all

ALT+F1
This way you can get to the manual even if you are chrooted, compiling, etc.

I cant remember the error off hand. It was three line, each started with '!!!' and in brackets, it said something like ('not='). Yes, I was trying links after chrooting, so I guess there wasnt really any error there. I'm almost up to that stage again. If it goes wrong again i'll be able to let you know, though I hope I wont have to.
Thanks,

Ok. I am now at the stage where I have to chroot. I tried doing env-update before hand, however it didnt work(Just as I thought - But it was worth a try). I guess i'll have to chroot it. If it doesnt work again. I'll write down the error. This is going to be very annoying:-p
Thanks,

I also got an error when i did env-update.

I did mirrorselect to find the fastest mirror and that added a comment in make.conf without adding a # at the start of the line. Once I added that, it seemed to solve the problem.

Can't remember exactly, didn't really bother reading it.

It's the line just above the one that list the gentoo mirrors. It went along the lines of:
Net select ......
and that's as much as i remember.[/list]
