How to force gentoo to build with a -j 4 ??

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to install gentoo for the first time. I have a quad pentium pro system that I am trying to install it on and I would like to have gentoo build everything with a make -j 4 inorder to make sure that it uses all 4 of my cpus. Would someone be kind enough to let me know if there is a simple way to do this.

Thanks,

I think it's in /etc/make.conf
Under the cflag, add -j 4

I'm not sure at all

This is set in /etc/make.globals as MAKEOPTS="-j2". To override it, edit /etc/make.conf and add MAKEOPTS="-j4". BTW, if you have 4 CPUs, set it to -j5.

Is -j(X+1) usually best, where X=num of cpu's?
