Mirrored GenToo installs across identical machines?

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Mirrored GenToo installs across identical machines?

  • Quote

Hello all,

I need to create an openMosix cluster for a large number of identical x86 boxes. What I'd like to do is a full, customised install on one box, set up openMosix on it, then simply mirror that install onto every other box. Can anyone recommend the best way to achieve this?

And is there any way to mass update all the boxes using portage (i.e. download source once and compile/install across every machine in some automated fashion?)

Thanks

Matt

have one 'master' and boot all the others over NFS? (ala the Knoppix OpenMosix system?)

I couldn't tell you how to do it, but there is info around on how to do it in that format :)

build one machine, and just use portage with --buildpkg, and on the other clients use emerge --usepkgonly, after mounting /usr/portage over nfs or samba

Search for Puffy OS.

It is a bootable cluster client.

The other option, what I did is "roll your Gentoo Distro". I created a Gentoo installation with only what I needed. Compilied a kernel with only things that i needed built in, no modules. Then I removed all files from /usr/portage/distfiles, and anything from /usr/src.

I then zipped up my root partition (except tmp proc and /root)...got an ISO editor, removed everything from the Gentoo disk I didn't need, and stuck that tarball on the Gentoo live CD.

From there I booted off the live cd, unpacked the tarball, emerged grub, setup it up, and voila.
I wanted to be a pimp when I grew up. Turns out I became a computer nerd. Go figure.
