emerging Gnome 2.6: how do I unmask it?

  • Quote

Post by shrubbery » Sat Apr 03, 2004 11:35 pm

First off, is the gnome-2.6_r5 ebuild really the final? It seems that a lot of people are having problems.

Now, I notice that all of the gnome 2.6 stuff is masked. I'd like to unmask it, but I'm not so sure how to do that. Is there a command? I tried editing the .ebuild file and changed "~x86" to "x86". That seemed to do nothing. I think that I might have to unmask every package listed in the ebuild file, but that seems like a pain. Is there an easier way?

Also, will emerging 2.6 over top of 2.4 cause any problems? I know that I'll probably have to delete everything gnome related that's in my home directory, but that's not really a problem.

Thanks!

Do an 'emerge sync' because gnome 2.6 is in the portage tree now according to http://packages.gentoo.org/. To emerge it, you'll probably have to edit /usr/portage/profile/package.mask and either delete or comment all of the gnome 2.6 stuff. Then you can do

Code: Select all

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome
Emerging 2.6 will automatically unmerge 2.4. It does a pretty good job of "upgrading" and most all of your settings from 2.4 will remain in 2.6.

Hope this helps

Wrong. Changes to /usr/portage are overwritten. Instead copy the masking to /etc/portage/package.unmask.

does unmask really work?

i followed the instructions provided for unmasking and emerging, i.e. i did the following:

emerge sync
cped "GNOME 2.6 mask" bit to /usr/portage/package.unmask
emerge -uP world

went through, got few errors (tho i creamed some of my config files, including FSTAB and a few others), but basically it said it was emerged properly.

after a reboot, i'm still getting 2.4. what gives? it works fine, thankfully, but where's 2.6?

There's no need to mess with package.mask or anything else. Gnome 2.6 final has been masked with ~x86, so ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" works fine. I know; I'm using Gnome 2.6 right now.

Try something like:

Code: Select all

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge /usr/portage/gnome-base/gnome/gnome-2.6.ebuild -pv
That should show some packages :)
