Persistent single line system status question

  • Quote

Post by jhboricua » Fri Sep 13, 2002 4:09 am

I'm wondering if this is possible.

I would like to have a single line either at the top or the bottom of my console screen that shows system stats like cpu utilization or %, mem utilization or %, network traffic ( if possible), # of running processes or better yet how many concurrent processes are running for say, rsync (because my box serves as a Portage rsync box, it would be neat to have the line tell me how many rsync processes are running at any given time).

What I'm wondering is if this can be done so even if there is no one logged on the machine, the line will still show up at the top/bottom of the screen all the time, whether I logged in or not. Any ideas?

Hi.

I could imagine that you could script that stuff into your bash prompt. Take a look at the Bash Prompt HOWTO.

This one should be pretty easy too. I recommend you to run top on some of your consoles (say vc/1). This could be do through /etc/inittab

change

Code: Select all

c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux
to

Code: Select all

c1:12345:respawn:/usr/bin/top > /dev/vc/1
I dont guarantee that it would work with just one copy&paste, you'll need to experiment on your own...
