Gnome Desktop Resolution and Icons size

Post by Painkiller » Mon Mar 15, 2004 10:45 pm

Ok Guys here a new problem...

After installing Gentoo i've goes to the gentoo site and print the desktop handbook (if i can call it in that way), i've configured xfree and my window manager (gnome in my case) but i don't feel fine yet as i feel with the screen resolution as i feel with windows 2k or xp in the same machine...

In the machine (a Dell GX1 with 8MB of an ATI 3D rage Pro Integrated, 196MB of Ram and a Dell 17" monitor) in win i can choose a resolution as high as 1152 * 864 @ 75hz with a depth of 32bit..
That resolution give me a lot of desktop and also a little as i like....

In the Xfree config file i've choosed the majour resolution as 1280 *1024 with a depth of 24bit, but Gnome only show me 1024 x 764 @ 85hz and the icons are soooooooo big that really really i don't like..i have very fine sight so i want my icons very small and a desktop more big...

So my question here are :
1.What files should i know how to edit ??
2. where i can find that info?
3.also with my integrated video card i've using the ATI rage generic drivers are fine ??, because there's nothing more close that match my card..

Thanx guys

Wouldn't you need to setup XFree to match the max resolution that Doze gives you? (1152x864) AFAIK windoze will give you the maximum resolution that your card can handle, so your XFree configuration should match that.
As far as your drivers, I believe you can just use the built-in kernel drivers for ATI cards now, if you use 2.6.X kernel. And the file you'll want to edit is /etc/X11/XF86Config

Gnome will not list that resolution until your XF86Config file has it as a possible mode for 24bit. Open up /etc/X11/XF86Config in your favorite editor as root and find the following section:

Code: Select all

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "Card0"
        Monitor "Monitor0"
        DefaultDepth 24
....BUNCH OF DISPLAY SECTIONS...
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 24
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
        EndSubSection
EndSection
Change the 24-bit display section to have the following "Modes":

Code: Select all

SubSection "Display"
     Depth 24
     Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
Then save your XF86Config file and restart X. It should show up in the Gnome settings now.

No...! Not the 24 vs 32 bbp thingy again

Well here is the deal, someone with more insight can propably give you the specifics, but 24bbp in xfree is pretty much the same as 32 bbp in windows. It has something to do with termonology mix-ups and the alpha channels. Correct me if I am wrong.

And yes modify all the sections, you will have a subsection for each BBP, display ..etc..etc.
