new wm for eye candy haters

For all you eye-candy-haters out there (you know who you are [what a dumb saying...of course they know who they are...]) I have developed a prototype wm for you. This is for anyone who has ever responded to a post about Karamba, Superkaramba, Pogo, gDesklets, xxx windowmanager, etc. with something like:

1) "What's the point?"

2) "Eyecandy is stupid."

3) "I enjoy CSPAN."

4) "I am a member of the International Paint-Drying Observation League."

5) "Eyecandy just interferes with my work."

This one's for you:

Quickly! Respond with flames! Tell me this is how your wm looks! Tell me how xxx wm can be themed like this! Tell me how informative CSPAN actually is!

All in good fun.

but...but...but... it has a frickin' START BAR, for crying out loud! What's the point? That's a waste of perfectly good pixels that vould be devoted to my 12 xterms! Why, I could fit another entire emacs session in that space! And are those titlebars with buttons? Luxury! How dare anyone call this a proper windowmanager for the eyecandy haters. Titlebars and start buttons are the way of the Dark Side; you might as well just use enlightenment at that point.

Okay, so which WM would most easily be themed to look like this? I would defiently go for - assuming, of course, that the start bar thingy was gone.

You know what would be cool?
If, instead of the start button, we could have a vi-like command interface (called the Common Launcher for Interactivity, BaCkgrounding and Killing), where for example in order to minimize an app, you would do :minimize[WindowID]{DesktopID}.

Enough of the Emacsification of the desktop with their puny Alt-F4 and Ctrl-X shortcuts!

And what's CSPAN btw?

If you really want a lightweight WM, try evilWM, its what i use *screen*

evilWM is great
- no start bar
- no task bar
- not even a manu of any kind
- ~25kb source
the only thing it has is about 20 keyboard shortcuts, but damn its fast

ION is the best. No unnecessary user-interface, or unused screen space.

Apps fill the screen. If you need more apps at the same time, split the screen, and the two apps fill the whole screen without overlapping. (recursive).

Believe it or not, I'm sure there's a few people with desktops like that... in fact, doesn't the default X server look like that? nice post

Hmm, the default "look" of XFree86 (without anything running) used to be a very characteristic "mottled" pattern. Nowadays I't simply black.

The default WM that comes with XFree86, twm, is really ugly and green (though configurable), but thats still better than the default fvwm, which was ^_^pink^_^ of all things.

Nothing wrong with it, I was just surprised to see it in a link from the gentoo forums. I graduated from A&M last May.

All I have to say is that you people disgust me. Here you claim to loathe all the bloatware, but you still use X! A console is the only way to be free of all these horribly bloated things, those libraries which are 5k larger than they should be. And no more of that pesky rodent that steals space from my desk!
No, the only way to really live and be free of the bloat is to use a gui-free system. In fact, Real Men program in brainfuck and malboge, and don't even run curses apps such because they only need a floppy disk for their entire system.

N.B. Bloat happens. Deal with it.

It's called "WM2". Some kilobytes of harsh C code. Configuration? Whazzat? Oh, yeah, you can change the background color. In the .h file. Then you recompile it.

By Xiombarg's black silk stockings, I can't believe there is somebody else on the Gentoo forum who's used wm2. Then again, I'm using the PWM included with ion-devel and think it's pretty sweet. I've even figured out a little bit of Lua to edit the menu.

wm2 is still way more bloated than for example, ratpoison is =D

I don't worry about bloat unless I'm stupid enough to run an environment that hogs resources better allocated to Quake3 (or Neverwinter Nights when I finally get my copy)

I love bloat, the more the better! After running Gnome, KDE and XFCE all at the same time, my machine burped and retired. So, the more bloat I can put on, the easier I can get a new machine approved.

I just got approval at work for a new 3.2Ghz P4 with hyperthreading and 2 GB of ram. Thank you bloat!

Why use something minimalistic? I'd rather put together an environment that suits me than settle for slapping a theme on GNOME or KDE or XFCE. To do that, I start with a minimalistic WM, customize the living hell out of it, and then add components to taste. If I was into cars, I'd be building a hot rod instead.

Why do you think I've been reading FVWM manual pages and going over other peoples fvwm2rc files? >^..^<
