gentoo-kernel-6.18.12: Your /boot partition is not mounted

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

gentoo-kernel-6.18.12: Your /boot partition is not mounted

I’m installing Gentoo on a UEFI system, and when I run

Code: Select all

emerge --config sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel
Portage prints the following messages and halts:

Code: Select all

 * Your /boot partition is not mounted
 * Please mount it and retry.
 * /boot not mounted
 * Your /efi partition was detected as being mounted.
 * Files will be installed there for gentoo-kernel to function correctly.
 * Assuming you do not have a separate /boot/efi partition.
 * Assuming you do not have a separate /boot/EFI partition.
Of course /boot is not mounted; I’m following the UEFI steps, which instruct me to mount /efi instead! From previous experience I know that gentoo-kernel supports UEFI systems, so why is it complaining this time?

Also, during the installation of gentoo-kernel and its dependencies, I received several warnings stating that no kernel source could be found in /usr/src/linux. Is that a problem? Why would the kernel installation process expect a kernel to already be installed!?

The directory is kind of irrelevant. I don't have /efi and my /boot is ESP. ;)

Anyway, I think the default is to have ESP mounted at /efi and /boot may be a separate partition or not.

Do you want to place your kernel on
  • ESP, along with UEFI loaders
  • on a separate partition on /boot
  • on root partition under /boot directory
?

Make sure your bootmanager/loader can access the partition where your kernel resides.

That'll go away after you have installed your kernel.

Code: Select all

init=/sbin/openrc-init
-systemd -logind -elogind seatd

The check gets its information from /etc/fstab, do you have a /boot listed there?
