Although I've had a lot of problems with i2c touchpads, I've never seen an error message like this before... It's possible that your touchpad doesn't work at all under Linux. To clarify this, we need a lot more information:
1. Does your touchpad work when you boot the latest Ubuntu Live CD?
1a. If not, it looks very hopeless.
1b. If so, test it with our GentooLIVE CD (use the latest version with the latest kernel).
2. Does it work there?
2a. If not... then it's going to be difficult ...
2b. If so, then you probably have a manually configured kernel ... in which case, in addition to the kernel .config, we also need everything described here:
