[SOLVED] Stereo sound not working

  • Quote

Post by davidbryant » Mon Nov 24, 2025 5:13 pm

I recently re-installed Gentoo on a new PC (Dell Optiplex 7020; all Intel devices, except for disk (SSD), which is Sandisk). I used the distribution kernel. I can't get stereo sound to work correctly. Only the right-side speaker works.

Code: Select all

david@localhost:~$ mpv --ao=alsa --no-config /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/audio-channel-front-left.oga
● Audio --aid=1 (vorbis 1ch 48000 Hz 96 kbps)
AO: [alsa] 48000Hz mono 1ch float
A: 00:00:01 / 00:00:01 (79%)
Exiting... (End of file)
Why does mpv say "mono 1ch" when my sound card has two channels? How can I fix it? Thanks.

Probably a default of sorts (does it for me too)?

Maybe try adding something like this to it:

Code: Select all

--audio-channels=2
Or maybe better even:

Code: Select all

speaker-test --test wav --channels 2
Kindest of regardses.

audio-channel-front-left.oga is a mono channel sound, prolly part of a suite to test surround sound in a multi speakers environment.

Code: Select all

$ ffprobe /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/audio-channel-front-left.oga
Input #0, ogg, from 'audio-channel-front-left.oga':
  Duration: 00:00:01.48, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 84 kb/s
Stream #0:0: Audio: vorbis, 48000 Hz, mono, fltp, 96 kb/s
As Chiitoo said, try speaker-test to check if your speakers both work. Also try it after plugging headphones, should headphones work normally, then it could be a hardware issue with left speaker.

None of that has any effect. All the sound comes from the right-hand speaker, no matter how I use the audio. Same thing when I watch a you-tube video: both channels play on one speaker. I can change the relative levels of the left and right signals, but all the sound comes out of one speaker.

It's fixed. Turns out it was a firmware issue. I applied all the fw updates recommended by Dell, and now my sound card works correctly.
