NVIDIA driver 580.95.05 / Laptop 3060 - no graphical desktop

Afternoon all.

Using distkernel and very little customisation, after upgrading to x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-580.95.05 (stable, no keyword), upon reboot I was presented only with a console. dmesg reported, "*ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000100] Failed to get dynamic displays"

Masking x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-580.95.05 and reverting to x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-570.195.03 restored functionality so no massive urgency: is this my error, or this version of driver?
