Emerge not wanting to update anything

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

Emerge not wanting to update anything

  • Quote

Post by iandoug » Mon Jul 14, 2025 6:04 pm

Hi

Last few days, emerge exits without updating anything.

Code: Select all

fractal /home/ian # emerge -auUDv world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
Dependency resolution took 41.02 s (backtrack: 1/20).

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "~media-libs/cimg-3.5.5" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- media-libs/cimg-3.5.5-r102::stefantalpalaru (masked by: package.mask)
/etc/portage/package.mask/gmic:
# keep gmic for gimp 2 plugin

(dependency required by "media-gfx/gmic-3.5.5-r100::stefantalpalaru" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])
For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

The gmic stuff is/was not a problem, it is because I am keeping an old version of gmic.

But there are things that should update...eg

Code: Select all

Is something broken on my system?

But it is probably a problem for emerge, try to solve the gmic problem.

No. Your system is perfectly sane and it doesn't want to update because there's no sane way of doing so. And it even tells you why:

Code: Select all

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "~media-libs/cimg-3.5.5" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- media-libs/cimg-3.5.5-r102::stefantalpalaru (masked by: package.mask)

Apparently it is. For now you can unmask cimg but that's not going to last long:

Code: Select all

echo "media-libs/cimg" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
or if package.unmask is a directory, add some file name there.

p.s. this mask might have come from some of your other overlays as I don't find it neither in ::gentoo nor in ::stefantalpalaru

Code: Select all

grep -r cimg /var/db/repos

Georgi

Hi guys

That gmic message has been there for weeks. It never stopped the updates before.

Previous discussion here: https://github.com/stefantalpalaru/gent ... issues/163

Let me check with Stefan.

Else I need to abandon gmic .... so sad.

Thanks, Ian

That's impossible. You're mistaking it for something else.

Did you grep for cimg mask/the last command in my previous post/?

Hi

I have

Code: Select all

fractal /home/ian # cat /etc/portage/package.mask/gmic
# keep gmic for gimp 2 plugin
media-gfx/gmic
media-libs/cimg
which has been there since April.

For some reason the cimg block is ignored by emerge, and it complains about wanting to update it. So I just ignore the complaint, and let emerge carry on with the rest of the updates. Only in recent days has it just stopped.
I think I probably added gmic in an attempt to stop the complaints about cimg.

If I comment those lines out then emerge finds a bunch of things to emerge, including
[ebuild U ~] media-gfx/gmic-3.5.5-r100::stefantalpalaru [3.5.0-r102::stefantalpalaru]

but let me just wait for response from Stefan as to what that is going to do.

Also blocker with sys-boot/unetbootin and app-emulation/winetricks wanting older version of 7zip than what emerge wants to install, but that is separate issue.

Thanks, Ian

Code: Select all

fractal /home/ian # cat /etc/portage/package.mask/gmic
# keep gmic for gimp 2 plugin
media-gfx/gmic
media-libs/cimg
Do you realize this is your own mask you're hitting?

Code: Select all

# keep gmic for gimp 2 plugin
That makes no sense. Package.mask is there to prevent packages from being installed, not to keep them. I don't know how you came to the conclusion to add this, but it's wrong.

What you've done is you had those installed, then added the mask and prevented portage from touching them but now something necessitates rebuild and portage is unable to do it becuse of your own mask.

Remove it and all should be fine. Don't wait for Stefan, he has nothing to do with your /etc/portage.

Georgi

I don't know what complaints you're talking about but this is not the way.
