Wifi not starting

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Wifi not starting

  • Quote

Post by wynnmc » Thu May 15, 2025 10:55 am

I have installed wpa_supplicant and filled out wpa_supplicant.conf as it is working on another machine. I have linked net.wlp0s20f3 to net.lo in /etc/init.d and copied /etc/conf.d from the working machine but it doesn't show anything in the list appearing before the "login:" and dmesg doesn't show anything except two or three references to iw and ifconfig shows wlp0s20f3 hasn't got a connection.

Can anybody see what I have missed?

wynnmc,

With no information, we can only guess.
1. did you install linux-firmware?
2 did you add net.wlp0s20f3 to the default runlevel, so it auto starts
3 Is the interface called wlp0s20f3 on both systems or did you forget te rename it inside /etc/conf.d/net ?
4. Can you start the interface manually?

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/net.wlp0s20f3 start
What errors does that return?

If its says that the interface is already started, use restart rather than start.

Thanks for replying, Neddy.

Yes, I installed linux-firmware and I have checked that it is there
Yes, it is

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/net.wlp0s20f3->net.lo
On the old system it's called wlp3s0
Yes, with

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/net.wlp0s20f3 start
it runs but ends with

Code: Select all

WARNING: net.wlp0s20f3 has started but is inactive
... however, pinging gentoo.org works!!

You have given me a way out of the mire -- thank you, Neddy

wynnmc,

That warning is expected. It is correct at the time it appears as the wifi is still in the process of starting.

You need to poke at it a bit deeper to find out why it does not auto start.
